DuPont Engineering Polymers and Kolorfusion International Inc. have formed an alliance to promote the benefits of dye sublimation printing on molded plastics. Kolorfusion has developed patented technology for dye sublimation decoration of 3D objects. The technology involves transferring a design into the surface of the part or into a coating on the surface. DuPont, meanwhile, produces several kinds of engineering plastics resins suitable for the process. These resins include PBT and PET thermoplastic polyesters, acetal, as well as nylons. Norway-based additive manufacturing company Norsk Titanium is building what it says is the first industrial-scale 3D printing plant in the world for making aerospace-grade metal components. The New York state plant will produce 400 metric tons each year of aerospace-grade, structural titanium parts.
