Wireless technologies are increasingly being used in the drive to reduce energy consumption. Itron Inc. is using ZigBee standard for home energy management and load control applications for its wireless OpenWay Advanced Metering Infrastructure platform. Itron’s OpenWay Centron meter uses Freescale Semiconductor’s single chip 32-bit controller/ZigBee transceiver, keeping size down while offering a battery life of 20 years. That lets utility companies control meters to avoid brownouts and shift loads. It also lets consumers save money by using appliances in off hours when rates can be reduced.
