Detroit—The Chevy SSR pickup, first shown as a concept vehicle at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, has been approved for production.
The production SSR—Super Sport Roadster—combines a rear-drive, open-air sports roadster with the utility of a pickup. The V8-powered SSR features a two-piece retractable hardtop stowed vertically between the seat and the rear storage bed.
Five-spoke alloy wheels and performance tires (19 inch front, 20 inch rear) promote the sports car look. The more practical side includes a 63×55 inch covered, lockable pickup box for hauling. A button on the key operates the tailgate remotely; a latch on the inside of the gate can operate it manually.
The production version SSR, based on an upcoming GM truck platform, will be available in 2003.
