Munich, Germany —Engineers at Siemens Linear Motor Systems have developed an impulse decoupling method to reduce reaction forces on machine tools. The method, which is patent-registered, can be used with any linear motor drive.
As with a normal linear motor system, the magnetic interactive force between the primary, movable section and the secondary, stationary track section produces the slide movement. The force propels the slide forward, but the reaction, instead of acting directly on the machine structure, first passes through a spring/damper system in the linear motor track.
When the impulse decoupling system is used on double-slide vertical pickup machines, the spring-mounted linear motor track stops vibrations reaching the machine bed. The sudden movement of one slide does not affect the other one.
One application where the advantages of this system really show up is in eccentric machining where the cutting tool must follow the contours of the workpiece. Putting figures to this, Dietmar Stoiber, Development Manager at Siemens LMS, says, "On a machine producing pistons for automobile engines, this technique has led to doubling the workpiece rotation from 2,500 rpm to 5,000 rpm. At this speed and due to the piston shape, the maximum acceleration on the cutting tool rises to 70g." Rather than being reduced, he adds that the accuracy with the new system even increased.
