Like many other components, shrinking is the name of the game for capacitors. Miniature packages, such the multilayer ceramic chip (MLCC) capacitor have expanded their range, with several suppliers targeting various improvements to replace thin film and tantalum capacitors. However, film capacitor makers are not standing still and have product enhancements to address application requirements, such as high temperatures.
MLCC WITH SOFT TERMINATION
AVX developed smaller case sizes of 0805, 1206, 1210, and 1812 for 50 and 100V high capacitance input filters. These input circuitry capacitors have been specially designed for power distribution applications and have a range of 1F to 2.2 µF. The low equivalent series resistance (ESR) and high capacitance make these units well-suited for a dc-dc converter input filter as well as POE (Power over Ethernet) applications.The low ESR results from the MLCCs' base metal electrode and a soft termination system that provides enhanced dependability performance when compared to standard termination systems. The soft termination has the advantage of reducing transfer flex stress to the component body and provides improvements in bend test and temperature cycling performance. The soft termination system improves board bend tests by two to four times with a 0 percent failure rate and no ESR change for up to 3000 cycles. MLCC TO REPLACE TANTALUM CAP
RCD Components Inc. expanded their (MLCC) Series CE with ratings up to 100 microfarads in case sizes from 1210 to 0402, depending on the C/V value. The ceramic capacitors allow a cost reduction over tantalum units. In contrast to tantalum capacitors, the MLCCs allow low equivalent series resistance (ESR) levels for improved decoupling, a more stable frequency, and a smaller package size. The units can replace 10 to 100 µF tantalum capacitors that typically are used for the smoothing circuit in power supplies and IC decoupling. SURFACE MOUNT FILM CAPACITOR
Electronic Concepts MINIFILM capacitors combine ultra small size with ruggedness capability. The Kapton-taped body with epoxy endfill and tin-plated copper terminals provide a tough exterior. Using a Polyphenylene Sulfide (PPS) low-loss dielectric, the units have a maximum capacitance change of 1 percent over the -55 to +125C operating range and can withstand solder flow and reflow temperatures to 260C. With a maximum voltage rating of 50V dc, MINIFILM values range from 0.047 to 0.22 µF. The dissipation factor for these units is 0.30 percent maximum at 25C and 1 kHz and the insulation resistance is 100,000 MO minimum. 2.2 µF MULTILAYER CERAMIC CAP IN 0402 CASE
Taiyo Yuden developed the industry's first 2.2 µF MLCC in the 0402 case size. This capacitor is smaller than the smallest film capacitors in 0603. High-precision multi-layering techniques were instrumental in miniaturizing the capacitors especially developed for trendy mini cell phones, undersized PDAs, digital cameras, and other ultra tiny portable electronic devices. Engineers reduced the dielectric particles' diameter to just 0.2 microns and still maintained the ceramic capacitor's electrical properties. This allowed a dielectric layer thickness reduction to one micron or less. The 402 MLCCs can replace the larger 0603 (1.6 x 0.8 x 0.8 mm) 2.2 µF devices, which translates into more than a 50 percent board space savings.
