Specific application requirements create opportunities for specialized motors to provide technology and features that meet the needs of unique motion control projects. A group of suppliers invent, manufacture and sell specialty motors which are custom-engineered to offer these unique technology solutions.
The motors highlighted here provide specific features useful for individual applications. High rotor inertia, for example, can make a motor useful for smoothing pulsating loads produced by reciprocating equipment such as piston pumps and compressors. A unique commutation method and direct-drive low profile technology, which enables customers to reduce system height, offer capabilities not found in conventional motor offerings.
These suppliers are usually targeting specific markets that would benefit from new and innovative solutions and provide alternatives to conventional technologies. The suppliers often provide engineering services, custom build capabilities and work with customers to design customized products, including any associated test equipment and tooling.
25-mm BRUSHED IRONLESS DC MOTORS
A unique carbon brush commutation method to deliver long life and operational efficiency in high volume manufacturing applications is a key feature of new 25 mm brushed ironless dc motors from Danaher Portescap.
Unlike the axial spring commutation configuration common to most brush dc motors, the new motors offer a rotational spring that delivers constant spring force, which extends brush life and minimizes motor sensitivity to vibration shocks.
The new commutation method, coupled with a metallic front end and optional integrated EMC filter, make the motors well-suited for rugged operation in semiconductor wafer handling, metrology and industrial equipment applications. An optimized power-to-size ratio is ideal for power hand tools where weight directly impacts operator comfort and efficiency.
The 25G is 53 mm in length, weighs 145 gm and provides 40W of power with 40 mNm continuous torque. The 25GST is 43 mm in length, weighs 111 gm and delivers 27W of power with 30 mNm continuous torque.
