Delcam, a worldwide supplier of specialist machining software and associated services, has acquired Engineering Geometry Systems, developer of the FeatureCAM CADCAM software line, introduced in 1995. FeatureCAM is a Windows- and feature-based milling system. The acquisition will compliment Delcam's products for toolmaking and other complex manufacturing operations, allowing them to provide products to address the worldwide need for CAM at various price points. FeatureCAM will continue as an independent product line, developed in the U.S. and marketed worldwide. "The only immediate difference existing FeatureCAM users will see is a change in the company name to Delcam USA," says Delcam's Managing Director, Hugh Humphreys.

Such machines are suited for a host of applications, including automotive, aerospace, defense, medical, computers and electronics, telecommunications, consumer goods, and so on. This discussion will examine what’s possible with smart machines, and what tradeoffs need to be made to implement such a solution.
