Danboro, PA —Sometimes fastening just isn't enough. Sometimes the fasteners have to look good while doing their job. "Panel fastener requirements are increasingly becoming cosmetic or functional with regard to color," notes Leon Attarian of Penn Engineering and Manufacturing Corp.
To support this trend, Penn Engineering has come out with metal-plastic hybrid panel fasteners with optional colored caps. Called the PEM Type PFP, this patented design combines a steel retainer and screw with an ABS cap that can be color matched with panels or other components. Alternatively, the fastener color can serve as an identifier—as in, "Whatever you do, don't unscrew the yellow one!"
When these self-clinching fasteners are tightened—by hand or driver—the plastic cap completely covers the retainer. In its standard configuration, the cap of this new fastener is black. But optional colors are available, including red, yellow, green, orange, blue, and violet.
PFP panel fasteners are available in complete assemblies for permanent installation in metal sheets as thin as 0.36 inch, or 0.92 mm. They come in two screw lengths for each unified or metric thread size—from #4-40 through #8-32 and M3 through M4, respectively.
