For solenoid valves, once the application requirements have been met, smaller is always better. In addition to compact size, the valves in this section display ease of configuring, high reliability even under constant operation and extremely low leakage.
COMPACT PNEUMATIC AND LIQUID VALVES
The Humphrey Model HK5 and Model HKL5 valves measure 12.6-mm wide and have a high 0.05 Cv flow rate. However, the applications are quite different. Designed for use with reagents and other aggressive liquids and gases, the HKL5 addresses applications in analytical instruments. The HK5 valve offers zero leakage in pneumatic applications. Both models are direct-acting solenoid valves with 1.5W power consumption and rated for pressures from vacuum to 30 psig. Available in a range of coil voltages, the solenoid has an isolated coil and restricted armature travel that provides a response time of 0.010/0.004 msec. With multiple porting configurations and the ability to be mounted on a manifold or a sub-base, the valves can be used as a two-way or three-way, NO/NC standard fill/exhaust valves. Porting options include 10-32 UNF, 1/8-inch NPT, M3 and a cover for 5/32-inch tubing.
COMPACT SIZE SOLENOID VALVES
Offering high reliability for pneumatic applications, Humphrey Products' compact 310/410 Series are three and four-way direct acting solenoid valves. The 310 and 410 valves can be combined on a manifold and valves from the same series can mount in-line or on a sub-base. Rated for inert gas and air from vacuum at 28-inches Hg to 125 psig, the 310 Series valves have a 0.12 Cv and the 410 Series valves have a 0.14 Cv. With a power consumption of 4W, the continuous duty coil has flying leads and is available in a range of ac and dc voltages. Using a short-stroke balanced poppet design, the units have rapid cycling capability, require no lubrication, and are more tolerant of impurities in the air system, ensuring positive sealing. With a non-locking push manual override standard, design options include a conduit connector with steel insert molded into the coil, dc surge suppression and ac MOV, locking override, plug-in DIN type connectors and built-in flow controls for the 410 Series valves to save weight and space.
MINIATURE CONTINUOUS DUTY VALVES
Festo MH1 miniature valves are only 10 mm wide. With a 4-msec response time, units provide either 14 l/min in the 2/2-way version or 10 l/min in the 3/2-way version. The solenoids have a variety of mounting options and up to 24 solenoids can be mounted on a manifold. To avoid exposed wires, a sub-D connector provides the electrical connections. An optional LED indicates the units status when operating from voltage options that include 5, 12 or 24V dc. Units have an expected life of 100 million+ cycles and a Class 10 cleanroom version is available. The units target light assembly, medical technology, semiconductor and process industry applications.
By experimenting with the photovoltaic reaction in solar cells, researchers at MIT have made a breakthrough in energy efficiency that significantly pushes the boundaries of current commercial cells on the market.
In a world that's going green, industrial operations have a problem: Their processes involve materials that are potentially toxic, flammable, corrosive, or reactive. If improperly managed, this can precipitate dangerous health and environmental consequences.
With LEDs dropping in price virtually every year, automakers have begun employing them, not only on luxury vehicles, but on entry-level models, as well.

A quick look into the merger of two powerhouse 3D printing OEMs and the new leader in rapid prototyping solutions, Stratasys. The industrial revolution is now led by 3D printing and engineers are given the opportunity to fully maximize their design capabilities, reduce their time-to-market and functionally test prototypes cheaper, faster and easier. Bruce Bradshaw, Director of Marketing in North America, will explore the large product offering and variety of materials that will help CAD designers articulate their product design with actual, physical prototypes. This broadcast will dive deep into technical information including application specific stories from real world customers and their experiences with 3D printing. 3D Printing is
