PowerGear is a software tool designed for the "casual" design engineer who doesn't have a great deal of gear design knowledge or practice. Users can download a free, fully-functional trial version, good for 30 days, at http://www.eversolv.com . The software works like a wizard found in Microsoft®products with a sequence of steps asking for input based on specific gear applications. But expert gear designers can also use the program, as it also features advanced procedures to fine tune a design.
Forge ahead
The Forging Industry Association's website at http://www.forging.org has introduced a new section—the Design Engineering Center. Subjects covered in this extensive site include how forging compares to other processes, characteristics and applications of forging, case studies, and frequently asked questions by engineers. There's also a link to the site's Custom Forging Producer Buyers Guide, as well as a forum area and a forging university.
Plastics plethora
The Rapra Technology Ltd. site offers a plethora of plastics provisions including a nifty rubber and plastics electronic library covering materials, properties, design, processing and conversion, environmental considerations, health and safety issues, testing, products, and raw materials. There is a subscriber fee to use the library, but the information is plentiful. Users will also find an abstracts database, bookstore and software store, as well as a dedicated search engine for plastics and rubber. Check it out at http://www.rapra.net .
This site will rivet you
Or at least let you download CAD drawings of the company's rivets and fasteners. Head on over to OrbitForm at http://www.orbitform.com . There's a section that explains all about riveting, impact riveting, and orbital forming. Users can download CAD drawings or check out rivet length and machine sizing data, as well as data on solid impact riveting and impacting riveting. Plus check out their charts on decimal equivalents of fractions of an inch, process cycle times and production rates, and profit margin calculations.
It's a match
Engineering Exchange is using the Internet to match clients who have engineering problems with consultants who have the answers (http://exchange.engineering-e.com ). The site allows companies to post projects for consultants to bid on them in open competition via a structured, manageable problem description process with templates that allow users to structure an engineering project into a formal RFP (request for proposal). The site uses secure-server software to protect all transactions. Cost is $250 per project or you can purchase a predesignated number of projects for a flat fee.
