Bayer Polymers (www.bayerpolymers.com) has introduced a new heat-resistant thermoplastic for auto -body panels. Called Triax TP 3161, this PA/ABS has a heat distortion temperature of up to 392 F, so it can withstand e-coat process without a conductive primer. The material has also been designed to offer a higher stiffness and lower CLTE than earlier body panel thermoplastics. Triax 3161 targets fender applications, though it could also see use in rear side panels.
Two new technologies from Stratasys, created in partnership with Boeing, Ford, and Siemens, will bring accurate, repeatable manufacturing of very large thermoplastic end products, and much bigger composite parts, onto the factory floor for industries including automotive and aerospace.
