Active Control Technology Inc.’s ActiveMine, a two-way communications and tracking system, has been approved by West Virginia’s Office of Miners’ Health, Safety and Training. The state requires the installation of voice and location systems during 2008. Wi-Fi is capable of transmitting voice and data throughout underground coal mines, operating even during cave-ins. Wired techniques are replaced by a system with 5.8-GHz wireless routers nodes and 2.4-GHz units for sending voice and location information, even offering the bandwidth needed for streaming video.
