DC POWER SUPPLIES

The model 1689 and model 1690 are two new regulated 28A dc power supplies. Using a standard 115V ac as power source, both bench-top units can provide variable voltage outputs of 1 to 15V dc, and up to 28A (at 13.8V) in continuous operation. They were specifically designed for use with radio equipment, and as car-battery substitutes for high-power car stereos, cellular phones, or ham radios.

Flanged immersion heaters

Glo-Quartz^® flanged immersion heaters, for tanks or pressure vessels, are intended for liquid or gas heating applications. Ultrasonic sensor

A new flat-profile proximity sensor combines a new piezoelectric transducer and microprocessor technology for reliable detection of a wide variety of label edges as thin as 0.051 mm. Featuring a 25.4-mm deadband for close-up mounting, the Superprox^® model SM607A-A08 has a fixed sensing window of 12.7 mm within a sensing range of 38.1 mm.

Multi-axis laser system

The Laserdyne^® 790 BeamDirector^® is a high-speed cutting, drilling, or welding system for flat or 3D parts that can be integrated with either Nd:YAG or CO₂ lasers. The product has a five-axis beam motion that allows a part to remain stationary during processing. It is suited for applications in automotive, aerospace, job shop and general manufacturing environments.

Polyamide adhesives

Three new Proform^TM polyamide hot melts offer both thermal stability and chemical resistance, up to a UL 94 V-O flammability rating for electrical applications. USB keyboard encoder

The USAR GeniKey^TM is a bootable USB keyboard with built-in PS/2 port. It allows systems that do not come with PS/2 ports to use readily available PS/2 output devices, without special drivers. And a USB hub is unnecessary, because the second USB port can be used for other devices.

Wire and tubing cutter

The model WC300 automatic wire and tubing cutter is a compact, stepper-motor-driven cutter that can process wire and small cables from 2.59 to 0.025 mm, and sleeving or tubing up to 7.93mm. The product can cut up to 12,000 pieces per hour of 25.4-mm wire, or 6,900 pieces per hour of 254-mm wire.

Resolver assembly

Series 2565, a 2.5-inch-diameter assembly, features a brushless resolver, assembled directly on the shaft to handle rapid reversals and sustained operation at high speeds. Internal connections, a compression-type strain-relief connector, and liquid seal make cable clamping easy. Construction includes: an O-ring; sealed-aluminum housing and cover with Iridits finish; and stainless steel, 3/8-inch-diameter input shaft, ball bearings, and hardware. Micro PLCs

New features have been added to the Simatic S7-200 line of micro-programmable logic controllers to improve performance in an enclosure 44% smaller than current models. Controller improvements include faster scan speeds of 0.37 msec per instruction from four to six simultaneously and independently operating high speed counters at 30 kHz each; two simultaneous, pulsed high-speed outputs at 20 kHz each, up to 6.5 Kwords of memory; improved communication functions and speed to 187.5 KB. Configurable analog input filters have been added. Simatic S7-200's MicroWIN-32 software now includes a new Function Block Diagram Editor and Windows integration.

Digital servo amplifiers

Expert series of digital servo amplifiers incorporate high-speed signal processing, power semiconductor technology, and integration to control linear and rotary motor driven stages and systems. The amplifier's digital inverter regulates the drive in a four-quadrant mode. All drive system parameters are software configured. With no jumpers or balancing pots to set, servo performance does not degrade over time or temperature change. The Expert series come in a range from 2- to 40-kVA power models. Bus voltages range from 160 to 650V dc. These drives are compatible with brushless linear servo, ac servo, and induction motors.

Gasket

Double-D shaped gasket aims to improve EMI shielding for plug-in modules. The gasket allows bi-directional wiping action without damaging the gasket or degrading the shielding, says the company. Double-D gasket is compatible with current rack designs because its height is similar and its width matches that of the BeCu strips. The gasket consists of a highly conductive silver fabric over open-cell urethane foam that is shaped to withstand bi-directional wiping forces. A cross-section shows two half circles connected by a flat polycarbonate insert embedded in the foam to ensure rigidity.

Handle assembly

Solid aluminum handle assembly with stainless-steel leaf spring meets IEEE 1101.10 specifications for cPCI and VME64 bus extension applications, and is targeted for rugged COTS requirements. An inject/eject handle retains a true U-height in the open position, allowing units to be stacked.

Plastic fittings

Instrument-quality miniature plastic fittings include barb, luer, and threaded fittings. Configurations include T, Y, elbow and couplers. Metal connector

The SN60MC metal connector nailer helps operators meet high-wind and earthquake building codes by fastening different joist hangers, connector plates/straps, knee braces, and tie-downs. The SN60MC is equipped with the PrecisePoint^® hole-locating safety system for increasing driving accuracy and preventing damage to framing and decking connectors. Grid couplings

Steelflex^® grid couplings are made of high-strength alloy steel and feature a tapered grid flexing element tempered to spring hardness, with the grid surface then precision shotpeened to compress surface molecules. Replacement grids drop-in without the need to move and realign connected equipment. The couplings protect driving and driven equipment from misalignment, vibration, and shock and thrust loads.

Fastening system

PopLock fastening system compresses and swages a steel or aluminum sleeve, creating a removable hex nut onto a drawn arc-welded stud in less than two seconds. This handheld setting tool resembles an outsized pistol with a pulling-head nose piece that holds an unthreaded sleeve that slides over a threaded stud. PopLock weighs 2.8 lb and is available with four pulling heads, from 120 to 330 mm. Nose housings accommodate steel or aluminum sleeves.

Epoxy adhesive

DURABOND 260NC flowable, industrial-grade epoxy potting compound is for bonding, potting, and encapsulating applications. Once mixed, this two-part adhesive sets at room temperature to form a rigid, black encapsulant that is non-corrosive to copper-based components on electrical and electronic assemblies. DURABOND 260NC's low viscosity allows it to flow around components in electrical housings, thereby unitizing multi-component assemblies.

Glass adhesives

Light Weld^® adhesives form water-clear bonds in seconds to glass and many plated metal and plastic substrates. The non-yellowing bonds are able to withstand hundreds of dishwasher cycles and severe environmental conditions. Applications include bonding and laminating automotive and architectural glass as well as optical and lens-bonding applications. The adhesives also form structural strength bonds between glass and other substrates such as ceramic, ferrite metal, and plated-metal surfaces.

UV-curable adhesive

The UV15-7LRI single-component, high-viscosity clear UV-curable adhesive matches the refractive index of glass. The system cures rapidly at room temperature when exposed to a UV light, and the compound's cure can be carried out in the presence of air. High bond strengths are obtained with glass and ceramics as well as other substrates including optical plastics.

Woven glass laminates

ULTRALAM^® 1000 Series woven, glass-reinforced polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) laminates match the dielectric constant and loss tangent characteristics for printed circuit boards. The laminates come in 4 x 4 ft and 12 x 18-, 24 x 18-, and 24 x 26-inch sheets, and standard thicknesses of 0.020, 0.031, and 0.062 inch for dielectric constants of 2.171, 2.50, and 3.0. Applications include common antenna and amplifier systems.

Sensors

The P4000 pressure sensor incorporates MEMS technology into an all-welded, stainless steel package designed to withstand pressure fluctuations and vibration in hydraulic equipment. It is suitable for applications with pressures from 0 - 8000 psi. Pressure connection options include a variety of straight and tapered thread configurations. Electrical connection options include AMP, Packard, DIN, Deutsch, hermetically sealed MS connectors, and molded cables.

Radial diaphragm valves

The DR series of patented radial diaphragm valves eliminates entrapment areas and drain easily. Each valve in the series includes multiple valves and multiple ports. Manufactured in a wide range of configurations, they require less piping and fewer connections. Valve bodies are machined from 316L stainless steel bar stock for avoidance of porosity found in cast valve bodies. Users choose from manual or pneumatic actuators.

Miniature pumps

The 3013 miniature diaphragm pump is suitable for pneumatic applications such as gas analysis and air monitoring systems where consistent flow delivery is important. It has a snap-and-clasp, press-on head. The 3013 pump produces 450 mbar pressures and 10-inch Hg vacuums.

Hand pumps

These manifold-mounted hand pumps provide a means for manually developing and increasing pressure in a hydraulic system. They furnish reliable power to presses, valves, doors, safety locks, and other devices when used as a primary pump for hydraulic systems or as a stand-by pump for emergencies. They have suction and pressure check valves, but no release or overload valves. The pumps eliminate the need for valve bodies and mount in standard SAE O-ring ports.

Diaphragm pump

The PH6 Panther diaphragm pump discharges seven to eight gallons of non-flammable fluids per minute. It is powered by a 12V electric motor and made from polypropylene and nylon. The PH6 Panther is equipped with a SEM-10 flow meter that is powered by three standard AA batteries. The meter has an anti-glare display. The pump operates at temperatures from 32 to 150F.

ERG position sensor

A new range of EGR valve position sensors are targeted for use in vacuum and electric EGR applications. The sensors, which are manufactured using a new thick ink, are tolerant to harsh automotive environments. The thick-film ink technology wards against fuel and ATF contamination and, since it requires no lubricants, is safe from dust and dirt common to most automotive applications.

Filters

The CAX filter removes dirt, oil, and water from compressed air. The filter element, constructed from hundreds of grooved plastic discs stacked on a plastic core, collects suspended droplets of water and oil and coalesces them into a liquid film that continuously drains from the filter. Filter assemblies are available for 1/2-, 3/4-, and 1-inch compressed air lines and flow rates to 400 scfm.

Special-effect colors

A line of special-effect masterbatches offers granite, metallic, pearlescent, and interference effects. Standard colors for the new line include white, gray, black, yellow, orange, brown, red, pink, blue, violet, green, gold, bronze, and silver. Custom colors are also available. Suitable for use in PE, PP, PS, PVC, ABS, and SAN resins, the new masterbatches come in granular, microgranular, and powder forms. First introduced in Spain, these masterbatches have seen use in packaging, toys, personal care, lawn-and-garden, and other products.

Specialty alloy

AerMet^TM 310, a new double vacuum-melted alloy, offers a high strength-to-weight ratio while retaining fracture toughness and ductility. AerMet 310 achieves an ultimate tensile strength of 315 ksi, and offers a 1.10 mega-inch strength-to-weight ratio, or roughly 10% higher than its companion alloy, AerMet 100. This new steel has a fracture toughness of 65 ksi inches in the longitudinal direction. It also exhibits good ductility. Production heats of the new steel averaged 14.5% elongation and 63.1% reduction in area.

Water-based adhesive

ND Microspheres® 294 is a water-based, micro-encapsulated epoxy sealant for use with threaded fasteners. Once applied, this solvent-free product remains inert until engagement with the mating part shears the capsules open, allowing the adhesive to cure. Microspheres 294 seals against oil, water, fuels, and a range of motor fluids.

Oven-cleaning film

TC-250 Thermal Cast film removes dust and other airborne particles from curing ovens--without requiring a shut-down. Non-tacky at room temperature, the film becomes sticky at 250F and begins to capture contaminants on its surface. The film comes as roll stock, but is typically bonded to aluminum sheet that can be placed in the oven or can pass through on the parts conveyor system. Coated panels last for about 200 passes through the oven.

Multi-purpose sealant

Dow Corning® 700 Industrial Grade Silicone Sealant, a one component silicone rubber paste that cures at room temperature, adheres to a variety of substrates, including glass, silicone rubber, and plastic. Once cured, the sealants typically exhibit 225 psi tensile strength, a Shore A hardness of 20 durometer, and a 577% elongation. It withstands temperatures from -76 to 350F. Applications include automotive trim, appliance components, and formed-in-place gaskets for compressors, gear boxes, and pumps. The cured sealant meets FDA requirements for incidental food contact (Regulation CFR 177.2600) and National Sanitation Foundation requirements for direct food contact (List 51). The product is also recognized under UL QMFZ2.

Silicone tubing

A line of silicone rubber tubing offers a Shore A hardness of 60 and has been heat stabilized to permit reuse at temperatures up to 500F. Applications include masking studs, pins, and other round objects too long for a silicone cap. The tubing comes in a variety of diameters and is stocked in 50- and 100-foot spools. Non-standard diameters and profiles are also available.

High-temperature compound

Splash Lube Gold Compounds combine nylon with a proprietary lubricant and additive package to provide wear performance at a lower price than other high-temperature resins. Intended for use in thrust washers, wear sleeves, sealing rings, and pump bushings, the material offers comparable or better wear resistance than high-temperature resins that cost as much as one-third more.

Graffiti-resistant paint

Fluorobase Z is a "functionalized" fluorinated polyester base resin for use in paints and coatings that must stand up to the assault of graffiti artists. Used in paint or coating formulations, the resin forms a surface film resistant to painted graffiti as well as acid rain, airborne pollutants, fuel spills, and other forms of chemical exposure.

Bench-mounted hose-crimper

Fast-cycling, bench-mounted hose-crimper will produce hundreds of assemblies per hour. Parker Phastkrimp will crimp four-spiral SAE 100R12 hose through 1.25 inches and six-spiral 100R13 through 1 inch, in both steel and stainless fittings. Its unitized die means there is no need for skiving tools, gauges, or special training.

Photonic soldering system

Semiautomatic, off-line rework, photonic soldering system is adjustable for all types of components, from uGBAs to large QFPs, and odd-shaped and hybrid devices. LS-100 is suitable for soldering and desoldering RF shielding and various paste in hole and solder-paste-on-through-hole applications. Code 62 hose ends

New Code 62 Fat Cat^TM features a fatter flange than standard SAE Code 62 (5,000 psi working range) hose ends. It is typically used on large Caterpillar-type heavy equipment, running with extreme high pressures. Single- and double-end flexi-hinges

A new series of Flexi-Hinge^TM devices use crossed springs capsuled in a cylindrical housing to provide angular travel up to 30 deg. Devices are frictionless, self-center when unloaded, and have low hysteresis. Clutch couplings

Clutch couplings provide positive rotary motion control for split shafts with in-line loads, and the BEC Series is a ball-bearing mounted rotor, allowing the rotor assembly to rotate with the drive shaft continuously. Maybe it was because of the Computer Technology Solutions Show, but many companies are displaying their fall wares in splendid fashion. Because of this, it was difficult to choose one product this time. Steve Shoaf from IBM says that markets are changing. Companies don't address one market any more, but are targeting the individual, so they end up targeting 50,000 markets at once. This requires that businesses compete through innovation. "It is a digital economy and companies need tools to help them address that," Shoaf says. The products in this issue specifically meet that need, such as Unigraphics Version 16, my Pick of the Issue, as well as Cimatron and Simul8. IBM and Enovia also address the innovation engine of the production process with the ENOVIA Portfolio, an integrated solution containing ENOVIAvpm, ENOVIApm, CATweb, and ENOVIA-DMU Navigator. The VPM segment allows engineers to design and optimize a product and its associated processes and resources during development. The PM segment is a full-function product data management program. CATweb enables manufacturing teams to share product information with the non-engineering community via the Internet or Intranet. And lastly, DMU Navigator is for collaborative and 3D visualization, navigation, review and simulation of all sizes of digital mock-ups.

CAD software

Unigraphics Version 16 marks the introduction of Predictive Engineering that incorporates product and process knowledge into the design. The engineer will be able to model the geometry, as well as analyze, simulate, optimize, and predict the performance of his or her design. Process Wizards and Process Assistants captures the company's customers' best practices and automates these to guide the user through a set of specific tasks. MoldWizard for example, automates the entire plastic injection mold tooling design process. Assistants, less comprehensive than wizards, for automated manufacturing are introduced in V16 CAM. V16 also sports a new streamlined user interface, added controls for assemblies, features and manufacturing operations.

Visualization software

Tooling software

Cimatron Ltd. (Livonia, MI) showcased Quick-Split, a new software that cuts 90% of core/cavity splitting time for tooling. Interactive, mold analysis tools automatically generate parting lines and parting direction analysis. According to Cimatron, what makes Quick-Split unique is its quick speed. Splitting projects that use to take 20 to 40 hours now take minutes. Different colored 3D parts provide a dynamic view of core and cavity, allowing users to define pull direction, animate the part, and split the geometry. Activated from within Cimatron software, Quick-Split separates the original model into core, cavity, inserts and sliders. Visualization capabilities show part components in motion.

Digital factory software

Process Planner for computer-aided production engineering (CAPE) includes four new engineering solutions--Body in White, Final Assembly, General Assembly, and PowerTrain. These enable manufacturers to plan, design, and manage entire manufacturing processes from preplanning through ramp up. Process simulation software

CADKEY 99 sets sail

CAE helper

CADfix^TM for ANSYS improves interoperability between CAD files by automatically cleaning up CAD models and preparing them for ANSYS design analysis. With this software, CAD geometry can be healed and repaired so that the analysis process runs smoothly. The product works with CATIA, I-DEAS, Pro/ENGINEER, and Unigraphics. Once design work is complete, simply save the model in one of the geometry standards such as IGES or STEP, launch CADfix, and the geometry will be prepared for simulation processes.

Actify's 3D View, a native 3D CAD model viewer, adds support for Parametric Technology Corp.'s Pro/ENGINEER CAD system. Non-CAD users can view and share native Pro/ENGINEER parts and assemblies without access to a Pro/E workstation. They can measure and markup CAD files without a CAD system, server, or translator. 3D View provides access to other CAD vendors as well including CATIA, I-DEAS Web Access, SolidWorks, Solid Edge, AutoCAD, Mechanical Desktop, and Parasolid.

Design News editors follow industry trends in many ways. Besides making plant visits and attending trade shows, we host many OEM suppliers who come to our offices to highlight and demonstrate their latest products, services, and applications. In the area of test and measurement equipment, and particularly oscilloscope technology, one only has to have read our last few issues to see that the industry's major players have been parading through our cubicles at a nearly breakneck pace--almost all of them have simultaneously introduced new, higher speed and greater memory models, as well as features such as voice control.

Under shorter design cycles, design test engineers must validate devices with ever-tighter circuit densities and higher bandwidth operations. But to paraphrase Lord Kelvin, "If we can't measure it, we can't know it." Fortunately, vendors are making it easier for designers to determine how well their latest demanding electronic designs and concepts perform, either to validate the components or adjust characteristics to meet requirements.

The very microchip- and processor-equipped devices (plus software) such test gear is measuring, are the sources, in turn, of equipment improvements. Not only is the basic electronic performance being enhanced, but also the physical versatility of the test equipment itself. Lower-power flat panel displays are cutting the bulk, weight, and power consumption of oscilloscopes. Thus, more powerful machines are becoming more portable, and the economies of scale are increasing performance per dollar spent.

Handheld, high-speed scopes

First out of the gate this month in the oscilloscope sweepstakes is a handheld unit for designers and others doing field or remote site testing, featuring the data storage and analysis capabilities of many desktop units. The Fluke ScopeMeter^® 190 Series battery-powered oscilloscopes offer up to 200 MHz bandwidth and 2.5 GS amples/sec real-time sampling using separate digitizers on both isolated inputs. The series features a memory of 27,500 data points per input for long duration, high-resolution recording. A Connect-and-View^TM function recognizes signal patterns to set up correct, automatic triggering for displaying a signal of interest, all without the user needing to reconfigure the instrument. And any signal changes are recognized and settings adjusted for a stable display. In normal mode, the last hundred screens are "memorized," so that using a replay button allows scrolling back in time to catch any anomaly as fast as 50 nsec. A "baby-sit" mode can capture up to 100 predefined glitches or signal anomalies. A NiMH battery provides four hours of operation.

Back-lit panel meters

The 10 Series of snap-in, green LED back-lit panel meters are sub-miniature dc voltmeters and a 4 to 20 mA loop-powered ammeter. Digit heights range from 0.22 to 0.43 inch. Voltmeters operate from a nine volt supply and feature auto-polarity and zero, 150A current operation, and 200 mV full-scale reading. The DPM 342 ammeter has a low voltage drop of 5.6V, calibration potentiometers for offset and span, screw terminal connections, and loop powered LED back-lighting. All include an integral snap-in bezel and a suitable PCB socket for instrument connection.

Temp monitor, fan controller

THMC50 is a local/remote temperature monitor with two 3.3V supply voltage supervisor circuits and an 8-bit, 0 to 2.5V digital-to-analog converter. The device is designed for temperature sensing and fan control using a two-wire SMBus serial interface. The THMC50 provides maskable interrupts for under/over temperature condition with default or user adjustable limit values. Applications include personal computers, and telecom and network equipment.

Pressure transducer

Model 267MR is a low differential pressure transducer designed for measuring pressure and flow of air and non-conducting gases. Up to six different pressure ranges (bi- and unidirectional) are available in each transducer, reducing inventory from 20 to four. Ranges include 0.1 to 30 inch W.C. full scale. Output is field configurable to 0 to 5 or 0 to 10V dc, and a 4 to 20 mA output is also available. Applications include medical instrumentation, variable air volume and fan control, and oven pressurization.

Power MOSFETs

S-Series of MOSFET RF power transistors operate at 90 and 120W, and up to more than 500 MHz. Designed to exhibit a low C_rss, says the company, applications include both narrow and wideband data and voice communications.

Lightpiped modjacks

Lightpipes direct light from PCB-mounted LEDs to the front of the modjack to indicate system activity. The customer-supplied surface-mount LEDs, in combination with the lightpipes, reduce EMI/RFI noise by 50% compared to a modular jack with integral LEDs, says the company. Replacement cost is also reduced because there are no LEDs on the jacks to fail. The modjacks have a plug latch on the top for easy demating and they are available in shielded and unshielded versions for both RJ11 and RJ45 styles.

Programmable controller

The Programmable Field Controller for the WAGO-I/O-SYSTEM allows users to store and execute programs locally and still communicate with the network. Program execution continues, even if the field bus connection is lost. Flash memory is 32k. An IEC-1131-compatible tool programs the controller so that a user can download simple logic control into each I/O node.

Load cells

The SLB Series subminiature load cells (Load Buttons) are for compression only applications where space is limited. Heat treated 17-4ph stainless steel forms the sensors and the sensing element features bonded foil strain gages for a full scale output of 2 mV/V. Accuracies are 0.25% nonlinearity and hysteresis, and 0.1% or better nonrepeatability.

Catalyst temperature sensor

Catalyst temperature sensor allows closed-loop temperature control as part of a system designed to reduce emissions and offer more robust catalyst monitoring, according to the company. It says the closed-loop feedback system approach results in minimized cold-start tailpipe HC, CO, and NOx emissions during the critical first 15-30 seconds before catalyst lightoff.

Whole surface wafer measurement tool

Nanomapper uses low-noise interfermonetry to map whole semiconductor wafer surfaces in three dimensions with sub-nanometer precision. The unit is designed for analysis of 200- and 300-mm wafer sizes and provides surface height mapping for 0.18 micron technology. NanoMapper meets 0.10 micron design rule specifications. Surface features measured include irregularities from crystal pulling, sawing, grinding or etching, polishing, and epitaxial growth. The unit may be used to control chemical/mechanical polishing processes. Output both visualizes and quantifies the surface, including irregularities.

Hall effect sensor

ATS660LSB is a zero-speed, Hall effect adaptive gear-tooth sensor solution for transmission applications. This digital differential sensor incorporates self-calibration circuitry that nulls out the effects of installation air gap, ambient temperature, and magnet offsets to provide timing accuracy over large operating air gaps for target pitches varying from less than 0.5 to more than 1.2 teeth per diametric millimeter. The single-chip sensing IC features high vibration immunity and precise duty cycle, with a small mechanical size of 9-mm diameter by 7mm length.

Solenoid control valves

Series 6000 solenoid control valves are built for long cycle life--typically 10 times longer than conventional solenoid valves. These valves use 360-degree, positionable slip-over coils that are completely isolated from fluid media; dual high-quality FKM elastomer seals, and UL plug-on connectors. Series 6000 solenoid valves are available in 2/2-way and 3/2-way versions with direct-acting or internally piloted operation. Choice of stainless steel or brass housing is offered. Operating pressures range up to 725 psi with media temperature capabilities of 14-215F. Port sizes range from 1/8- to 2-inch. NPT and orifices are from 3/64 to 21/2 inches.

Gigabit transformer modules

H5008 and H5009 single-port gigabit modules fit directly behind a standard RJ-45 connector to consume less board space and provide better electrical performance. Pressure controller

DPI515 pressure controller enables quick and easy testing of pressure gauges, transducers, and switches. Pressure ranges are available up to 3,000 psi gauge or absolute, offering precision up to 0.01% full scale. Dual range versions provide fully independent channels, enabling any two pressure ranges to be combined. An optional barometric reference enables both gauge and absolute operation in addition to reading ambient pressure. DPI515 digital control system features fast response time, no overshoot, and a setpoint stability better than 0.001% (10 ppm) of full-scale pressure. The unit is fully programmable for high-speed operation, with a long-term stability of 0.03% of reading per annum.

Data acquisition system

Integra Series Model 2700 Multimeter/Data Acquisition System is a half-rack sized alternative to dataloggers, plug-in cards and custom assembled test and measurement systems. Model 2700 can perform up to 80 differential channels of measurement and control. Built-in mainframe signal conditioning can handle inputs up to 1,000V (300V with plug-in modules). Two card slots accept a variety of input modules with the flexibility to vary channel count from 20 to 80, apply a stimulus to DUTs, route signals, control system components, and make measurements with 13 different test functions. The units feature DMM-like pushbutton controls and front/read inputs. Features include programmable scan lists, a 50,000-point memory buffer, and built-in scaling and digital I/O. Communication to a PC can be through either a GPIB or RS-232 interface. Model 2700 ships with Windows-like ActiveX startup software. Applications range from product development and process monitoring to production testing.

8-bit microcontrollers

PIC16C717, PIC16C770, and PIC16C771 family of 8-bit microcontrollers integrates advanced analog capabilities into a small 20-pin package. The chips pack a high-resolution 10- or 12-bit analog-to-digital converter, enhanced capture/compare/pulse-width modulation, and on-chip voltage reference in a small footprint package. PIC16C717 and PIC16C770 feature 2,048 2 14 bits of OTP program memory, and the PIC16C771 features 4,096 2 14 bits of OTP program memory. All three devices contain 256 bytes of user RAM. The devices have 5 MIPS performance at 20 MHz, 16 I/O pins, 4-MHz internal clock oscillator, high-performance communication capability via I2C/SPI interfaces, one 16-bit timer, two 8-bit timers, a watchdog timer, and a wide 2.5 to 5.5 operating range. The level of resolution provided by these devices gives designers the ability to discriminate smaller signal changes--important when interfacing with a variety of sensors.
