Power supplies with ac input and dc output, dc input and dc output, dc input and ac output have to fit in smaller spaces in virtually all systems and, at the same time, must increase efficiency to reduce heat losses.
CONVECTION-COOLED POWER SUPPLY
Lambda has developed a single-output power supply, the SCS120PW series that provides up to 120W of convection-cooled power. Available with output voltages from 12 to 24V and output currents up to 10A, the series accepts input voltages from 90 to 264V ac and contains active power factor correction (PFC) circuitry to meet EN61000-3-2 standards. The supply is packaged in a 3 x 5-inch footprint and is 1.27 inches high (including underside components), making it small enough for usage in 1U enclosures. The SCS120PW series operates in a temperature range from 0 to 40C for full load and derates linearly to 50 percent load at 60C. 400A/IN3 ISOLATED POL CONVERTER
Vicor Corp. has developed the V048K015T100 V-I Chip Voltage Transformation Module (VTM). Capable of supplying 100A, the VTM meets advanced DSP, FPGA, ASIC, processor cores, and microprocessor applications at the point of load (POL) and provides isolation from input to output. With efficiencies of 90 percent at 1.2 V/100A, 92 percent plus at 50A, units have a maximum continuous output rating of 100A up to 1.5V and 150W up to 1.6V over a Vf input range of 26 to 55V dc. Paralleling VTMs provide hundreds of amps at an output voltage settable from 0.8 to 1.6V dc. Units can operate either open or closed-loop depending on the application's output regulation requirements and can eliminate bulk capacitors and the high power distribution losses caused by bussing high currents to the POL. ENCAPSULATED DC-TO-AC INVERTER
Endicott Research Group developed a family of vacuum-encapsulated dc-to-ac inverters for powering cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) backlit LCDs. The encapsulated E200II and SE/SE2 Series inverters provide maximum resistance to shock, vibration, and humidity for reliable CCF lamp ignition, regardless of environmental conditions. The inverters typically operate at 80 to 85 percent efficiency and are designed and tested using the actual LCD display assembly to ensure system compatibility. Measuring 0.60×1.2×1.56 inches (15.3×32×39.7 mm) the E200II can power one or two CCFLs with up to 8W of output power. The SE/SE2 Series is only 0.420×0.75×2.98 inches (10.66×19.1×75.7 mm) and provides up to 5W of output power for single-CCFL backlights (SE model) and for two-lamp configurations (SE2 Series). Target applications include CCFL-backlit flat panel displays where compact size, high efficiency and absolute reliability of the power source are critical, such as in medical diagnostic equipment, industrial instrumentation, and point of sale displays. SINGLE AND DUAL OUTPUT 10W DC-TO-DC CONVERTERS

DIGITAL POINT-OF-LOAD CONVERTER
Power One's No-Bus Z-1000 Point-Of-Load (POL) converters provide digital power and control without an I˛C interface, host processor, or external non-volatile memory. The ZY1115 in this family is a fully programmable step-down POL dc-to-dc module that integrates digital power conversion and intelligent power management. The digital converter's user-defined outputs range from 0.5 to 5.5V with input voltages from 3 to 13.2V. The unit has a continuous output current of 15A with active digital current sharing. The unit does not require external components for sequencing, tracking, protection, monitoring, and reporting. Pin jumpers, external resistors, and capacitors program performance parameters can be changed at any time during product development and service without a communication bus. 50-W AND 100-W SINGLE OUTPUT SUPPLIES
Kepco's RTW series are 50 and 100W single output power supplies designed for general purpose, L-chassis applications. Units have built-in remote ON/OFF and remote error-sensing capabilities, overvoltage protection, overcurrent limit, and power factor correction (typically to 0.99). The output voltage shuts down when an overvoltage is detected and requires a 30 second interval before resetting.
