Silicon carbide parts
Silicon carbide parts are made by converting graphite to 100% silicon carbide. The resulting material is impervious to most acids and is thermally stable to 2,000C. It has a fluxural strength of 17,000 psi with a MOE of 27 Mpsi. As manufactured, the material has the same porosity as the parent graphite. The silicon carbide can be impregnated with film formers to provide superior bearings and seals. When a nonporous material is desired, the surface of the silicon carbide can be sealed with a pure silicon-carbide coating.
