Sponsored Technology Content Light Matters: "Primum non nocere"In partnership with Avnet
Primum non nocere is taught to all medical students. It means "first, do no harm." Physicians must always consider the risk of inflicting further pain or suffering when treating a disease. Today, many minimally invasive surgical and diagnostic procedures are performed with the aid of an endoscope. Find out how HBLEDs may prove to be a major inflection point in the evolution and safety of endoscopy and laparoscopic surgery. Are datasheet specifications provoking or confusing? Many comments about our datasheets are mostly "good" or "well done." On some occasions, however, customers complain about missing information. Find out how one unexpected caller found the datasheets offensive. Read More Engineering Concept ConduitIn partnership with Digi-Key
Welcome to Engineering Concept Conduit, this site takes a look at the engineering challenges your peers faced and examines the components that solved those challenges. Find out how this translates to a concept you can implement immediately. Our first video features the functionality of the Omnimouse. Read More Webcast: Mechatronics in the Age of Digital ImagesIn partnership with Bosch Rexroth, National Instruments and Siemens PLM
Avid photographers talk about image focus, shutter speed and depth of field, but rarely do they talk about image sensors, gyroscopes, actuators and ultrasonic motors. But the digital camera is truly a mechatronics marvel. Kevin Craig's three-part webcast takes you through the basics of photography through the birth of the digital age to explain how mechatronics is revolutionizing the digital camera. In a bid to boost the viability of lithium-based electric car batteries, a team at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has developed a chemistry that could possibly double an EV’s driving range while cutting its battery cost in half.
For industrial control applications, or even a simple assembly line, that machine can go almost 24/7 without a break. But what happens when the task is a little more complex? That’s where the “smart” machine would come in. The smart machine is one that has some simple (or complex in some cases) processing capability to be able to adapt to changing conditions. Such machines are suited for a host of applications, including automotive, aerospace, defense, medical, computers and electronics, telecommunications, consumer goods, and so on. This discussion will examine what’s possible with smart machines, and what tradeoffs need to be made to implement such a solution.
