How’s this for one big high-performance supercomputer: The IBM Blue Gene/P Intrepid at the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF), located at the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory, will soon earn the distinct honor not only as being the fastest computer in the world for open science, but also to be among the few to boost heavy-duty data analytics and visualization capabilities.

Argonne just awarded GraphStream Inc. a contract to make data analytics and visualization at this scale possible via the world’s largest installation of NVIDIA Quadro Plex S4 external GPUs. This new supercomputer installation, nicknamed Eureka and comprised of 104 dual quad core servers equipped wi...Read More

Siemens PLM Software is trying to sweeten its PLM story for engineers in SMB companies. As part of its Velocity Series aimed at smaller companies, the company just released Version 4 of the Teamcenter Express module, which is the collaborative product data management piece of the series.

The newest component adds capabilities directed at two audiences: Project managers and shop floor personnel. The pitch for the upgrade is to continue to increase the functionality and useability of PLM tools, allowing smaller companies with limited budgets and IT staffs to enjoy the advantages resulting from a wider segment of employees being able to access a single source of updated product data.

For project managers and lead engineers, ...Read More

Seal Shield Fights Germs With Antibacterial Keyboard

For all of you germophobics out there, here’s something for you: An antibacterial, dishwasher safe keyboard and mouse. The Silver Seal keyboard and mouse from Seal Shield Corp.  are made from antibacterial plastic that is infused with something they refer to as all natural, pure silver ions. This, according to the company, is the big difference between the Silver Seal product line and other “antimicrobial” keyboards and mice. Those offerings are manufactured with a chemical coating that can rub off, but the Silver Seal keyboards and mice leverage the ions so when they’re exposed to moisture in the air, it creates an antimicrobial shield around the hardware to resist any bacteria.

Those shaking their head might want to take notice. According to recent studies, the keyboard and the mouse are major sources ...Read More

For all those users of CAD and PLM systems looking for a way to better manage project resources, schedules and processes, a collaborative effort between SolidWorks and Clarizen promises a solution.

Clarizen, which offers a hosted project management software platform, is working with SolidWorks to build integration between their respective products to address the process collaborative end of the design process, according to Clarizen CEO Avinoam Nowogrodski. While most PLM and CAD systems have collaborative capabilities for managing design content and the bill of materials, they lack tools for understanding the status of where you are in the course of a project vs. where you want to be. Many PLM and CAD users work with Microsoft Project,...Read More

Engineous Acquisition Adds Dassault's SLM Story

For years, PLM has been the big draw at Dassault. Lately, the 3-D design tool firm has been making noises about SLM (simulation lifecycle management), the idea of putting similar data management, application integration and process automation capabilities around the practice of simulation.

Dasssault this week produced another chapter in this SLM story. The company bought Engineous Software, a small Providence, RI, company for $40 million. Engineous’ FIPER software is some sort of distributed development environment that lets organizations access, execute and reuse design simulation tools and processes within an organization and externally with partners. Dassault’s SIMULIA [www.simulia.com] brand says the acquisit...Read More
