Google Phone?

June 22, 2007

Apparently the much talked about Google phone has finally been released in the form of a widened LG chocolate phone. The Google phone has been rumored and kept under wraps for quite some time now, but according to the Register, LG just released the KU-580 in Italy and France which is enabled with Google search, maps, and mail. The phone is already slated for further European expansion.

This phone may be what the rumors were suggesting, but based on earlier indications the phone was intended to be revolutionary and a stiff competitor to the iPhone and from the looks of it, it’s a pretty standard phone, somewhere between a blackberry and a chocolate.

Some features of the phone, besides the Google aps, include FM radio, mp3 player, a two inch LCD widescreen, a two megapixel camera and another camera lens for video chatting.  One visible downside is that there is no qwerty or full letter keyboard, which may prove to be a hiccup for web browsing.

It does seem a little odd that the phone hasn’t received more press if it is the mythical Google phone, but at the same time it does coincide with the release of the iPhone due out soon, and even back when there were just rumors, Richard Winsor, phone annalist for Nomura, said "This is not going to be a high-end device but a mass market device aimed at bringing Google to users who don’t have a PC," which sets it in contrast to the iPhone, a very high end phone. Either way, once the phone hits American markets, we will all have a better understanding of where it stands.

Maybe LG and Google would be nice enough to send me one to try out… then again maybe not.
