Pleo Robotic Dinosaur with Sensors and Motors

December 26, 2007

Ok, so the Christmas holiday has come and gone, but if you are anything like me, you probably wait till December 24 to do the majority of your shopping and chances are you still haven’t gotten that gift for your nephew who lives across the country and are willing to blame it’s delayed arrival on holiday postal traffic but you still need something now.

Well one idea is the Pleo robotic baby dinosaur from Ugobe.

This sophisticated dinosaur features a sensory network and camera vision system, including binaural microphones, light detection, skin sensors, surface detection in its feet, force feedback sensors in its joints, an orientation tilt sensor and an infrared sensor in its mouth.

Pleo also features 14 motors, over 100 custom-designed gears and 32 bit microprocessors for central and image processing, as well as 8 bit subprocessors for motor control.

The Pleo has two speakers in its mouth and back and features both a USB data port and an SD slot as well as a infrared transceiver for Pleo to Pleo communications. The battery for the Pleo is a NiMH battery which is both rechargeable and replaceable.

The best thing (best is a subjective term when you are talking about a robotic dinosaur) I read about the Pleo is when two Pleos are around each other they interact. So now you have to buy your nephew two Pleos so he knows about this great feature. Also, when one Pleo sneezes near another Pleo (yes the do sneeze), he can transmit a cold to the other Pleo. Isn’t technology great?

Pleo is available on the Ugobe website store for $349.

Light Matters: The Unsung Heroes of Modern Health Care
First, let's define "no-compromise." In an ideal configuration, this lamp would use a high-brightness LED (HBLED) that is built into a small, integrated package and is able to produce a large quantity of focused light, operate with a high level of reliability and generate no audible noise. Is this difficult? Yes, but it is possible.
