NASA Uses Thermal Imaging Data for CA Fires
NASA’s Ikhana unmanned flight drone has been enlisted in the firefighting efforts of the United States Forest Service battle against the raging fires in the San Diego area.
Using thermal imaging data, the drone feeds the data back down to the ground where it is overlaid on the Google Earth application.
This information helps firefighters plan their attack on the fire.
Advantages of the drone include its use of infrared and invisible light to determine the spread of the blaze and the fact that it is unmanned, so it doesn’t have to stop for human needs.
