NOT Seen On The Show Floor

March 8, 2005

There are plenty of new products and services visitors to the National Design Engineering Show will see this week in Chicago’s McCormickCenter, but there are others that may be just as useful which they won’t see on the floor, either because vendors aren’t ready to release them or just aren’t exhibiting this year.

For example, Automation Direct is highlighting several products at its booth, but plans to wait until June to introduce some very significant additions to its product line: servos.

The company already has virtually every other product that can be classified as a motion control component. In June, they plan to complete the circle of products with new servos. “That will bring our offerings full circle and complete our system solution,” says spokesperson Tina Crowe. Already, the company has a lab for motor and drive testing.

Also not showing on the floor of the McCormickCenter is a new platform for drives offered by Siemens. The company opted instead to introduce the products to the press at an offsite location in downtown Chicago. Responding to such trends as the clamor for modular designs with built-in intelligence and smaller machines with integrated safety, Siemens is expanding its Sinamics line of drives. They include the G110 general purpose drives as well as the ET 200S, G130, G150, and S150, and S120. They all have common platforms for programming. The G11o drive is in use now, and the others will be fully launched in May.

Light Matters: Systems Level Approach to HBLED illumination applications
Its good practice to apply a systems-level approach to high-brightness LED (HBLED) illumination applications. Minimally, the system includes the optical, thermal and electrical characteristics of the of the HBLED, the lens (if any) which is built-in to its package, secondary optics such as external plastic lenses/reflectors to direct the light as your application requires and power driver electronics.
