Message in a BPA-free "Hydration" Bottle

 It’s not a water bottle, anymore. It’s a “hydration” bottle.

That’s what Thermos L.L.C. is calling it’s new Intak (the a has a flat line over it, but I’ll be damned if I could find it in Word’s special Symbols).  Who says “I need hydration, now” instead of “I’m thirsty and need a drink of water.”  How fru fru can it get?

Anyhow, the bottle is made from Eastman Chemical’s co-polyester, which was introduced at the 2007 K Show and was covered by our materials expert Doug Smock. Durability along with heat and chemical resistance were among the reasons Thermos chose the material, according to press release. Also, it is Bisphenol-A (BPA) free, a chemical used on polycarbonates and linked to numerous health hazards.

Anyhow, Eastman sent me one of the blue (it also comes in pink, purple and green) bottles and I tested it out at tennis last night. The water tasted the same and I guess I was better off for not using a bottle made with BPA.

The bottle is stylish, but a bit complex with a top that latches with a metal clip. Knowing how my athlete daughter throws water bottles around, I wonder how the top and clip will hold up over time.Lose the top and bottle heads for recycling.Water bottles are famous for being lost, anyway…or damaged.

Anyhow, it’s cool-looking so when my daughter returns to college after Thanksgiving break, I fully expect her to have grabbed it from the closet where we keep our water bottles (see photos). Looks are everything, after all.
