Is American Industry Responsible For Hurricane Katrina's Damage?

October 19, 2009

Victims of Hurricane Katrina have “earned their day in court” and might have the standing to sue industrial America over global warming, according to today’s Wall Street Journal.

The newspaper says that the Fifth Circuit Court in New Orleans has ruled that the plaintiffs in a proposed global warming-related lawsuit “had sufficiently detailed their claims to earn a day in court.”

The suit was reportedly brought by landowners in Mississippi who claimed that coal and oil companies emitted greenhouse gases that contributed to global warming that, in turn, caused a rise in sea levels, thus adding to the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina.

A web site quoted in the WSJ story said that the ruling will invite more climate change litigation.

If that’s so, can suits against automakers be far behind?
