In a rush to save face, China is now saying that the real problem with toys made there is poor design engineering in the United States. Mattel Inc. recently recalled close to 20 million Chinese-made dolls, cars and action figures that had lead paint or small magnets that children could swallow. "About 85 percent were directly designed by the American company and produced according to requirements of the American importer," says Li Changjiang, director of China’s General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine. "I personally have seen some of the toys. There are serious problems in their design, so they are highly dangerous for children. These types of toys would be recalled in any country," he said in a news conference today in Beijing.
Know what I think?
China has a terrible safety track record, and has no business trying to bounce back the blame. Also in the news today: 1) 265 workers in the city of Xiamen got sick after eating at a restaurant and 2) New Zealand launched an investigation after children's clothes imported from China had dangerously high levels of formaldehyde.
Sure Mattel deserves a lot of grief for not supervising their supply chain better and not thinking through toy designs in advance. To Mattel’s credit, though, they have quickly owned up to their problems and promised to turn things around.
What are the lessons from this? Let’s rethink what “the China price” really means. Sure you can get a quick 20 to 50 percent savings. But what’s the long-term cost? Not just economically, but to your company’s reputation?
Does it bother you that American imports of Chinese-made products hit $288 billion last year, triple the total from 2001? It should.

to the author, if you think the claim from the Chinese, that most of the Mattel's near 20 million toys recall is caused by faulty designs from the US, are groundless, you need to show us some hard facts. Not about some people got sick after eating in a Xiamen restaurant, but about the recalled Mattel toys.
The Chinese officials are saying that only 15% of the 20M recalled toys are due to the leaded paint, the rest 85% are caused by faulty design, in particular small magnets on those toys which can be swallowed by kids.
Please show us that their claim of the percentage is untrue, that the design is flawless and all those small and dangerous magnets found on their toys are not on the design scheme but added later on by those greedy Chinese workers.
Otherwise I can only assume that you must be receiving some salary from Mattel for writing this shameless PR article to cover their rear end.

First, no excuse for using leaded paint on those toys, the Chinese manufacturer deserve the blame. The fact that its owner committed suicide proved it.
But in my personal opinion, Mattel is no better, or even worse.
The new toy safety standard has been in place since earlier this year. My guess is it would''ve forbidden Mattel to sell all their toys with loosely attached small magnet parts.
Why instead of taking all those unqualified toys off the shelf, Mattel kept selling them for months? The answer might be that they''ve got a well made damage control plan in hand.
They first through the recall of 1.8M toys with leaded paint to bring the public focus to the "poisonous toys made in China" crisis. Covered by this smoking grenade, they then announced the 2nd, real mass recall of 20 million ill-designed toys. Since they were also made in China, the true reason of the recall was largely ignored by the public as predicted. Besides, how many parents who shop at Wal-mart or KMart would really pay freight to replace a 14.99 dollar used toy?
By doing all these, Mattel are showing its commitment to the new safety standard, its concern of children''s safety, and all the blames are on the Chinese. Better yet, they still made some money out of those toys instead of nothing. A perfect business case here, you see?

I just feel amazed all these "made in China" things appear at same time of this short 3 months and cannot imagine if "Mad Cow" was also originated in China.
Anyway, sugar-canes cannot be sweet at two ends. Why complain if your wallet is not that full and the purchase is cheap. Never forget Chinese goods help keep inflation down at least 1.5% in USA.

toy and food are totally different,I can not understand how could you found the relationship between them.and nobody can guarantee their productions are 100% qualified when they produce a lot,and more and more everyear.
Let us look at this American food company "Castleberry".

Hot Dog Chili Sauce Recalled for Botulism Poisoning
See,even they have 40 years history and experience, they are still making poisoning food sometimes.
Accroding author's logic,USA food company also produce poisoning food,so mattel also has Blame right?

Toy design, not production, blamed for recalls
New study of 550 U.S. toy recalls finds majority were because of design flaws and not because of manufacturing defects or lead paint.
