I agree, Rob. A biography of Elon Musk would make great reading.

I recently rented a copy of the movie, "No Highway in the Sky" with James Stewart. And, yes, it's dated, but it still holds up well as an engineering movie after more than 50 years

Good questions, Chuck. That's a good story for a movie. Maybe the novel or biography has to be written first. Feel like writing a novel or biography?

The real question, Rob, is how long will it be before we see a movie about Elon Musk and the SpaceXDragon?

Yes, Chuck, the SpaceXDragon opens a whole new door. It will be interesting to see what happens when space travel is not dependent on government budgets.

Today, at least we can say that SpaceX Dragon is doing something with that computing power.

Yes, that probably is a conservative estimate, Chuck. Now that we have greater computing power to support space travel, it's too bad we're not doing much with it.

I can only imagine how much computing power they could pack on one of those Gemini capsules today, Rob. Probably 1,000X as much as they had back then (that's probably a conservative estimate).

Yes, smart engineering rather than just smart computers. In a power point earlier this week, I saw a stat that claimed the average smart phone is now equal in computing power to NASA's Apollo computer.

Rob: What's most amazing about all the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo flights is how much they did with computers that would be considered virtually useless today.

This column wraps up our discussion of encoders with information about resolvers, which provide angular data over 360 degrees.
Engineers use rotary encoders to measure the angular position of an attached device or to measure distance indirectly.
