Open source and expanded support for Modelica is where Maple is at primarily, as they explain it, to create a system that can be readily extended and customized and to deliver better integration among multidisciplinary tool sets. Apparently, Modelica is a popular language, hence why they are placing such a big bet.

It is very useful to have open source languages that many tools can use.  There are tools that are open source and use languages from proprietary tools.  On the other hand, other vendors may not be interested in supporting this.  Frankly. many of these languages are similar.  I heard of one modeling tool that uses an extension of VHDL, for example.  It looks like we might need a standard here.
