Since 1968 Morgan Plastic has made handy little presses for engineers and small manufacturers. See: http://www.morganindustriesinc.com/ You can buy them on the used market for little money. For years we used parts from these presses when large production was impossible.

Great story, Ann. I really like the slideshow. Better quality parts than 3D printing and lower cost -- what's not to like?

Yes, JimT, I remember both of those presses. At my local zoo, I believe they made plastic hippos. I also remember the coin press.

Thanks, Al. This made me think of a Gadget Freak article in reverse: what would happen if one of our many innovative, creative Gadget Freak inventors had gone ahead and commercialized his/her invention and sold it? I've noticed reader requests for exactly that on some Gadget Freak comment boards.

Excellent slide show, and a good example of engineers as opportunists.  Developing a way to cost effectively create custom parts.

Yes, I remember those kits as a kid, Jim. I had one that made plastic (or some similar material) army men.

Do you remember when you were a kid; there were two examples of modern industry at the Zoo? One was the little coining press that took your copper penny and rolled it into a coined medallion; the other was micro injection press that molded a little bear as a souvenir in front of the Polar Bear house. For a Quarter, you watched a little mold-press produce your bear.  I still remember the smell of molten polycarbonate I smelled for the very first time.

NASA's MAVEN spacecraft has entered Mars' atmosphere, carrying instruments to help Earthlings figure out what happened to it. Launched last November, the spacecraft arrived at the red planet right on time after a journey of 442 million miles.
More bioplastic materials have entered the 3D-printable filament fray. These PLA formulations reinforced with wood or bamboo fibers will debut at the October Composites Europe show in Germany.
Airbus Defence and Space has 3D printed titanium brackets for communications satellites. The redesigned, one-piece 3D-printed brackets have better thermal resistance than conventionally manufactured parts, can be produced faster, cost 20% less, and save about 1 kg of weight per satellite.
At IMTS last week, Stratasys introduced two new multi-materials PolyJet 3D printers, plus a new UV-resistant material for its FDM production 3D printers. They can be used in making jigs and fixtures, as well as prototypes and small runs of production parts.
GE Aviation not only plans to use 3D printing to mass-produce metal parts for its LEAP jet engine, but it's also developing a separate technology for 3D-printing metal parts used in its other engines.
