Al, thanks for the link, but that's an entire community, which we already have at Design News. I'm proposing a single forum within the DN community.

Often ideas are the very core of a new or significantly changed product - eminently patentable and valuable.  A means needs be created to enable to discuss such matters in private as already mentioned, but additionally a means needs to be created, stronger than NDAs, to protect the idea-person's rights.

That's a good idea. I think IDEO has a good platform: http://www.openideo.com/

I've had great experiences in Ning creative communities too: http://www.ning.com/

Ann,  An interesting discussion platform that's growing in popularity among larger websites is www.disqus.com.  The goal is to use create participation using a variety of formats including breaking news, hot discussions, live events and even video content.

One way of getting around any unwieldiness would be to create a collaborative App around some of the more enlightening contributions to the DESIGN iDEAS which could be accessed by the Design fraternity.

Imagine an App for "Problems & Solutions in Aircraft Manufacturing" or the "A-Z of Battery Manufacturing" gleaned from the collaborative effort of numerous engineers and designers.

Imagine an App around the fascinating "Sherlock Ohms" series.etc.

Imagine a cross polliation to EDN and other sister publications........

Thanks for the feedback, ScotCan. I can see how that could be a problem after awhile.

Well Ann, engineering.com has a large site which over the years has become somewhat unwieldy. There are a large number of forums and it looks like it has become so large as to be problematic. This info is passed along since the Design News idea is a good idea but may suffer from similar woes as it grows.

They are the links from your article.

An example of a very active forum would be:

http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/categories

A "wiki" type site may also be an interesting format to consider along with a forum type site. e.g. wikipedia.com, etc.

At the JEC Europe 2015 composites show in Paris last month, makers of composite materials, software, and process equipment showed off their latest innovations. This year's show saw some announcements related to automotive applications, but many of the improvements came in the world of aerospace.
The DuPont-sponsored Plastics Industry Trends survey shows engineers want improved performance in a broad range of plastics and better recycling technology. These concerns top even processing enhancements that improve productivity.
Plastics leader SABIC recently announced a global initiative to help its customers take advantage of additive manufacturing (AM) and also advance 3D printing (3DP) technologies in several application areas. The company's plans go way beyond materials, and also include design, processing, and part performance.
A theme that was reflected in several ways at NPE 2015 was the use of 3D printing to assist in, or improve on, injection molding, as well as improvements in 3D printing materials and processes that are making better functional prototypes and end-use parts.
In this second materials slideshow from NPE2015, we've got some plastics that vendors were showcasing, including products made with them, and others that were brand-new introductions at the show.
