The uP is jus one part of the equation. The rest are the parts that make it do something. This is where much of the power is needed!

The lowest part Microchip lists on their website is 30uA/MHz, so you could hit 1uA if you run at 32KHz.  Surprisingly, TI's FRAM parts don't get that low.

One PIC procoessor I worked with had a power demand of 1 micro-amp. Anything is possible!

The magic in most of the low power micros is not how much power they consume, but their ability to have autonomous peripherals that can run in the background until processing power is needed.

Cabe, being able to do all this requires some smarts in the device.  The ability to store data and sense power levels is the result of having low cost, low power electronics available.  This whole area is generating a lot of innovation, which is quite exciting.
