This is certainly a very cool storage idea, but I like the idea of repurposing spent vehicle batteries.  Maybe Elon Musk will take a look at that?

Cabe I say it's mere beginning. If they can store this much now figure out what will be future like.

That's exactly the point, Cadman-LT, that's why there are a few companies working on this. EnerVault seems to have one of the strongest ideas, but Ambri also--another company I mention in the story--is a strong contender in this space as well.

Well, with all of the progress in solar and wind energy..this seems like the next logical step....storing all of that power.

I wish the article came with some facts. What did it cost per KW, what cost per KWH, what round trip efficiency.

Big storage helps big energy which then require big grid, and big profit for middle folk.

Right now, in many places, hydro is being used to allow nuclear and coal to fun full power because they cannot throttle without damage.   Not only does this force electricity process negative which can never happen with solar, wind or waste to fuels, it wastes the valuable hydro storage.

My guess is that ecar batteries removed from ecars when they degrade to 75% of capacity will be cheaper and come in more convenient smaller sizes. Even individual homes and businesses will want them. That will drive utilities to lower prices.

Elizabeth you know this development is very beneficial and crucial for our part of the world. Here we suffer terrible load shedding of electricity and gas. Resulting in a poor living standard and very low output of industry. Even in the 21st century being a nuclear power we are still suffering. So I myself is anxiously waiting for a growth in relevant field.

Yes, I think that's why this is such an important development, far911.

The output you are talking about is gud enough to be used as an alternate source beside hydro or coal.

Thanks for pulling out that information, Cabe. That is a pretty decent number considering the power source.
