It might take 10 men and/or a construction machine to pick up a large piece of debris from a building collapse or disaster, but it takes only one robot. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Robotics Challenge
is proving that with a competition to develop robots that can assist in disaster recovery or emergency situations, performing tasks that would put humans in peril. Pictured is one of the competitors in the challenge, the SCHAFT, from a Japanese company of the same name. It handily outperformed rivals in recent trials.
