A recently announced partnership between Qualcomm Technologies and MLB Advanced Media will aim to enhance overall network connectivity in all major ballparks over the next few years, granting consumers faster and more reliable Internet access through their mobile devices. The deal makes for an even grander and more interconnected media-driven ballpark experience.
Qualcomm Technologies, a subsidiary of the widely renowned semiconductor company Qualcomm Incorporated, enters the deal with plenty of previous experience servicing businesses' network connectivity needs. With previous work in network optimization of high-density venues such as the Superbowl and the Olympics, Qualcomm is well aware of the increasing demand for mobile data and digital content and is prepared to provide the national pastime's fans with an "unparalleled in-ballpark experience."
MLBAM, the centralized interactive media and Internet company operating all of MLBs online content, was established back in the summer of 2000. In July 2010, the majority of MLB.com's traffic crossed over to mobile streaming -- so the deal with Qualcomm comes as no surprise. Already, MLB operates an incredible amount of online content: from around-the-clock access to updated stats, fantasy gaming, gameday pitch-by-pitch apps, the At Bat app for mobile devices, and live full-game audio and video streaming.
As part of the deal, Qualcomm will begin to roll out engineering and technology surveys of major ballparks over the next few years to evaluate and plan for better wireless coverage that includes optimized WiFi, 3G, and 4G services.
It will be interesting to see how such improved network connection will enhance the user experience at the ballpark. Besides the ability to effectively share the view from your behind-the-plate seats or even nosebleed panoramic views with social media sites, it can be speculated that the change will drive a greater amount of related digital content available to fans from technologists cashing in on the optimized network performance. All in all, the change is sure to enhance the overall in-game experience and continue the trend of increased connectivity.
