Ford likes to say it has a better idea. Judge for yourself whether this is one of them. The automaker has teamed with Maytag to build a concept minivan that would be a home on wheels. Among the features of the Windstar Solutions: a refrigerator, for storage of perishable items so you don't have to go right home from the grocery store; a microwave oven, for heating popcorn, hot chocolate, or other beverages; a cooler; a trash compactor; a wet/dry vac; a washer/dryer, to clean your shirt and tie if you spill something on them between appointments; and an entertainment package, including provisions for movies and electronic games.
Looks like we now have the answer to what some politicians call the housing crisis. Forget houses: Let everyone buy one of these vehicles, if they ever get produced.
What are they thinking about? A press release circulated last spring said the concept vehicle is an outgrowth of research Ford and Maytag did that showed consumers are super busy, deal with many lifestyle demands, and spend a lot of time in their cars. Maybe the researchers spend too much time in meetings.
Or not enough time.
Now, we know that this is only a concept vehicle, and may never see a production line. But as long as it's still in the planning stage, why not add a few more features:
A fireplace , for those who travel over the holidays and yearn for the comfort of the hearth.
A garden , for those too busy to plant one in the backyard.
A swimming pool for cooling off during summer trips.
There's really no end to the amenities we could give this concept vehicle, and surely you can think of some yourself.
Oh, here's another one: a personal gas station, right in the back seat. With it, drivers wouldn't have to stop for gas. They could fill up while they're moving. Which is probably a good idea, since they'll be using a lot of gas. That's because the Solutions could distract resources from the refinement of energy-saving alternative-fuel vehicles.
