Tank inspector
As environmental compliance standards for underground storage tanks become more stringent, this tethered robot will save time and labor. Deployed through a 4-inch fill pipe, 'Fury' inspects a buried tank's interior even as the tank remains in service. Magnetic wheels allow any orientation, while an ultrasonic transducer, embedded in a rolling carrier, measures wall thickness.
A 45W motor from MicroMo Electronics, Inc., Clearwater, FL, drives the robot's pivoting wheel. The company also provides two 9.5W motors with integral gearheads. These power the steering unit and transition mechanism, which lifts the pivoting wheel when moving between tank wall and end cap.
Maxon Motor, of Fall River, MA, supplies a 90W motor to drive the rear wheel and cleaning brushes.
