Visualization capabilities have been a must-have feature for all the major MCAD and PLM platforms. While there have been myriad approaches to visualization and the vendors each approach it on a different scale, the technology primarily serves two roles: To allow users upstream from engineering to view and markup CAD models without having to own and know how to use the originating program or as means for engineering groups to more effectively deal with multiple CAD files–again, without having to own and operate a slew of complicated design technology.
Since its acquisition of PLM vendor Agile Software, which delivered the Cimmetry AutoVue visualization package, Oracle has taken a much broader view of visualization. Given its roots in enterprise software, Oracle envisions AutoVue as a platform for enterprise visualization-not just for MCAD or ECAD models, but for all document visualization needs within in organization from a single platform. The software is designed to work to its full potential when used in tandem with a document management or PLM platform, like Agile PLM.
In the most recent AutoVue 20.1 release, Oracle is refining and enhancing its enterprise visualization story. AutoVue 20.1 now has a more robust enterprise class architecture so as company officials say, “it can serve all of an organization’s document visualization needs within a single platform” and “is capable of delivering engineering, asset and product information throughout the entire enterprise.”
Celine Beck, Oracle’s senior product strategy manager for AutoVue, broke down the main capabilities of the new AutoVue 20.1 release into these four categories:
Format leadership: The new release has improved support for 2-D and 3-D file formats, including all of the latest release of CAD and ECAD programs.
A more robust platform architecture: AutoVue 20.1 is loaded with improvements that address the reliability, stability and administration of the platform, including a new automatic upgrade capability and support for virtualization.
Visualization enhancements: The core of AutoVue, this release incorporates enhancements not just for better visualization of documents, but rather for enhancing business process to connect visual information to other types of information in the enterprise structure. For example, Hotspots, one new feature of the release, lets textual elements in a document or drawing be turned into hotspot links that trigger actions or launch pages within other applications. There is also the new AutoVue Document Print Services function for automating and processing high volume print operations.
Industry-specific capabilities: There are a variety of targeted features and capabilities to enable customer business processes, including several focused on the end-to-end design-to-manufacture process in the high-tech space.
