FLUID POWER: A new grade of Fortron® polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) from Ticona is being used in an innovative blow molded hot water tank designed to withstand high temperatures in a line of European kitchen ovens developed by Miele Inc.
The H 5000 series of ovens from Miele uses “Moisture Plus” cooking, a process that draws hot water from the blow molded tank as jets of steam to give bread a crispy crust and keep roasts tender on the inside while browning on the outside.
Fortron MT9115L0 DW, a high viscosity 15 percent glass-reinforced grade, is ideally suited for this geometrically complex blow molded water tank that involves food contact. It can withstand continuous service temperatures of up to 240C - even peaks of up to 270C. This Fortron PPS grade has been approved for food contact applications, according to European Union Directive 2002/72/EC, and it meets the regulations of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for food-related applications.
In the United States, the Ticona portfolio also included three injection molding grades of Fortron PPS - MT9120L4 (20 percent glass fiber reinforced), MT9140L4 (40 percent glass fiber reinforced standard flow) and MT9140L6 (40 percent glass high flow) - that meet not only U.S. FDA food contact requirements but also U.S. Pharma standards for drug contact and medical and dental devices. With their innate excellent chemical, steam and high temperature resistance, these grades are also ideal for sterilization equipment used in preparing such devices for use in hospitals and medical and dental clinics.
