At PTC’s media and analyst briefing today, Andrew Wertkin, VP InSight Products and Technology, discussed the rational behind PTC’s acquisition of Planet Metrics, an environmental analytics software application, that allows users to model and analyze life cycle carbon emissions and energy use throughout the entire value.
“The acquisition is part of PTC’s plan to create a portfolio of solutions to support green product development,” Wertkin said. PTC’s current offerings include InSight Product Analytics Solution, a tool that allows users to not just track restricted substances, but also get early warnings on substances of concern. That’s key, Wertkin noted, as some materials that are critical to an application require a extensive R&D effort to identify an alternative solution.
But, he noted, customers did not have a solution for executing on a company-wide energy reduction strategy until now.
“Planet Metrics has great technology for modeling and analyzing the carbon footprint throughput the entire value chain, allowing companies to assess hot spots and determine where they need to do more research and where to apply their resources and perform substitution analysis of materials, packaging, suppliers, and modes of transportation,” said Wertkin.
He went on to say that 80% of the energy impact is in the product and the logistics surrounding it, and that the Planet Metrics analysis tool presents a huge opportunity for companies to reduce their impact. He also pointed out that the tool allows users to track and compare performance and also to perform extensive trade-offs studies across the value chain. “Decisions can’t be made in isolation, it’s a complex process and many of the variables that impact energy consumption are interdependent,” he said.
Planet Metrics counts among its customers companies in the automotive, manufacturing, and consumer packaged goods industries.
