I have an old HP printer that ended life not because of failure, but because newer operating systems no longer supported it. It was too bad, since I had a brand new black ink cartridge that I was never able to use. But what I liked was that even though the color ink cartridges had long run dry, it was not a problem because my print jobs were all black text, and the printer continued to work without color ink.
Not so with my Epson machine. The greyscale setting is not sticky, so you have to remember to select that option every time you print something. What’s worse, the machine still uses the color ink even when greyscale is selected. And, if any one of the color ink cartridges runs dry, the printer refuses to print at all. The online help says it will, but don't be fooled -- it won't.
What a wonderful marketing scheme to force users to pay for colors they do not need or want! And they make it so easy to order ink online right from the low-ink error reporting page. When I clicked over to order color ink cartridges, the confirmation page came up with this message: “You may want to print this page for your records.”
