My wife and I each own Mini’s, an ‘08 Cooper Clubman and an ‘07 Cooper S. Both of them have the same quirky wiper and automatic HVAC and fan speed controls.
The backlight wiper control has separate, fixed positions for off and on. If the control is left in the on position when the ignition is shut off, when the vehicle is restarted, the wiper does not run. To run the wiper, the control has to be turned to off and then back to on.
The automatic HVAC button is not a toggle. It only turns the automatic temperature control system on from off or from manual mode. Once the button is depressed, depressing it again does nothing. The only way to turn the system off while the ignition is on is to turn off the fan. The fan control is a wheel with center off and momentary up and down positions to respectively increase or decrease fan speed. To turn the system off, one must turn off the fan. Holding the wheel in the down position rapidly decreases fan speed, but if the wheel is not immediately released at fan off, fan speed can be increased back to maximum.
