I bought a SONY DCR-DVD108 camcorder. The first group of video miniDVDs it created were very good. Then it acted up, not letting me continue a recording, and not letting me finalize the miniDVD. I got on the internet to see how to recover the video from the miniDVD. Many, many programs claimed to be able to recover such video, but none worked on my PC. Chatter on the internet indicated that this is a common problem for DVD camcorders of all manufacturers.
There is no explanation of why this is a camcorder problem (computer DVD drives are super reliable), or why it is so difficult to recover the video. Manufactures are moving to flash memory camcorders, which means users will have to download their video to a computer and then burn
a DVD to be able to watch their program on a DVD payer. This will mean millions of dollars worth of camcorders will be trashed, and users will have no recourse.
I know the video on my miniDVD can be recovered because I sent it to Sony Media Services and they recovered it - at a charge of $50 a miniDVD!
I asked for a program to let me recover it on my PC, but all they gave me was a list of key words to use for a Google search for such a program. I had already done that. There are lots of companies advertising video and data recovery services, which makes me suspect that users are being taken advantage of because drive manufacturers are ignoring this problem.
