Another consideration worth mentioning is the use of ramp tables to drive stepper motors.  In certain applications, depending upon motor type, performance requirements, loading and operating speed, ramp tables are used to gradually 'ramp' up from a slower speed to the faster speed.  This helps prevent the motor from stalling as it goes up to the faster speeds (which typically have different torque values than the slower speeds).

Micro-stepping low cost steppers...

Low cost steppers also do not have well controlled coild positions, as such, the quadrature modulation of the coils does not produce the expected angular results.

Scientific grade steppers are needed for very precise angular control when microstepping very small angles.

Very true, the can steppers are a great bang for your buck, and although there are other advantages to microstepping an inexpensive stepper, the extra resolution you gain will not be very accurate.
