Extend USB 3.0 Vision Applications Over Fiber

More and more cameras (including machine vision) and the need for more bandwidth is one of the leading trends in industrial networking applications. Good use of higher speeds. Thanks for update on this technology.

Remainds me of another example of a bad selection (USB).

History tends to repeat itself. Dumb decisions in consumer market, case in point.

It was the case of Sony´s Betamax versus VHS: maximum recorded time won over image quality... easy when consumers are dumb and easily misguided.  Then came their Minidisc, again it was unappreciated by consumers, and lousy MP3 won based on small size storage over sound quality. Megapixel count won over pixel performance in consumer digital photo cameras, and so on.

Around the time USB was issued, Apple and others proposed  the excellent FireWire (IEEE 1394 interface).

It was MUCH , MUCH better than USB, in too many respects, but, again, dumb, ignorant people was carried on to believe USB was the way to go, and greedy manufacturers that are always willing to assasinate in order to save half a penny on a computer, quickly jumped on the USB bandwagon.

Younger engineers at Apple dropped support of their own previous selection and ended installing FW on their Laptops.

But for quality sound and video, FW was the really good one.  It is curious to see the extreme lenghts some top notch ("High End") manufacturers have gone to literally force the USB audio to just acceptable performance levels, like re-clocking and other necessary pirouettes, instead of simply using the old, reliable and elegant FW.  (Albeit, most equipment for professional users in the Pro-video and media arena still use it).

Sorry to expose my ramblings, but it pisses me too much to see dumb decisions turn over millions  of consumers towards less than optimum formats, practices, and more gadgets to be thrown into the garbage sooner than ever.

On the matter of video camera cabling, continuing enhancements of IEEE 1394 (including P1394d) would be even better than any USB on steroids.

Extending the distance gap is very important and I'm following this development closely.  I look forward to reading more about this new technology and seeing it incorporated.

Glenn, the use of fiber to exxtend USB is an interesting approach.  With this approach camera data can be processed by a centralized unit rather than at the camera.  Even using "smart cameras" one might want to take the images back to a central location to record the data for later analysis.
