Great explanation. I consider the inertia ratio to be the single most important calculation when applying servos. If a motor/drive package has enough wattage to do the job at hand, and the inertia is properly matched, the system will normally work well with reasonable attention given to the mechanical details.
Maximum power transfer is often overlooked as a benefit of inertia matching.
As an EE, it looks to me like you are matching impedances (and maximizing power transfer). It's always interesting to see the same answers come from seemingly unrelated fields/systems.
