Gadget Freak Case #161: Golfers Go Green with Envy
Why putt golf balls into a paper cup when you can have your own variable-terrain putting green? This course designed by Mark Giannasi, Aaron Gaylord, Brody Collins, Thomas Boileau, and Maiki Vlahinos offers players three cups and three skill levels. The most advanced level raises two platforms that change the terrain of the course -- and the challenge that golfers face. But even with only three cups, you can still shout, 'Fore!'

Love the foam machine gun pest zapper.  (Does it work on salesmen too?)

I like the pest zapper, too, as long as it doesn't hurt the animals! I guess you don't actually have to aim directly at them! There are a few neighborhood cats in my area I'd like to deter from eating the food put out for my cats. I also think the interactive beer pong table is pretty funny. It would have been quite dangerous to have when I was in college!

Elizabeth, I like the the same two you do...and the smoker is also cool. We have cat and raccoons that get in the trash all the time. That zapper might just do the trick!

Yes, Cadman-LT, a zapper would come in handy especially with a raccoon, since they are generally such bold animals! I think cats might run off with just a firm wave of the hand and a bit of yelling at them. Raccoons, not so much. :)

Elizabeth M, I like this gadget as well because its physically safe because of the foam rockets. This gadget also remind of the science demonstration I performed on of my kids elementary school visit. I took a toy robot that launched foam missiles and wired it to a Handy Cricket microcontroller board. A light sensor (photocell) was attached to the Handy Cricket so that a wave of my hand would launch 3 foam rockets into the classroom audience. The kids loved it and I had a blast  building it and demonstrating the modified robot launcher  to the classroom as well.

You're right, mrdon, I am sure it is safe. I know animals can be pests but we of course don't want to hurt them, and I'm sure the designers of the tool felt the same way.

Elizabeth M Ok and thanks for the confirmation. I have two dogs and I do realize the fact that they can feel pain just like humans. Its good to know the designers wanted to build a deterrent device without the feature of inflicting pain on animals. Its a cool gadget!!!

mrdon, nothing to do with this. I just wondered if you knew if line conditioners work or not. I have an audio hiss from my tv that I want to eliminate and before I buy a conditioner...I just wonder if they work if you know?

Cadman-LT,

Here is blog-forum that provides a solution to eliminating audio hum without using a line conditioner. Hope this helps!

As someone who has used, and watched my kids use, pitching machines, I like the idea of the pitch alert systems. Part of hitting is timing the pitcher's windup (or stretch) to get ready for the arrival of the ball.

The variable golf green

The variable golf course is quite an interesting system indeed. I can see that some other versions using that same machanism could be the basis for a product that might sell well at some upscale golf courses and country clubs. It could duplicate some of the tougher holes from around the world. There is a whole lot of potential in the concept. And that mechanism is a great idea, good use of fairly standard materials and technology.

Colorado Smart Bike Shifts Itself

As I was going through the Gadget Freak slides, the "Colorado Smart Bike Shifts Itself" caught my attention because of the The Lexus F Sport Roadbike article Charles wrote. In his article, the Lexus bicycle uses an electronic derailleur to shift gears. The smart bike built by the Colorado State University engineering students  uses standard off the shelf electronic parts for their controller. I'm just wondering what is the cost differential between the Lexus F Sport roadbike derailleur device compared to Colorado State -U engineering students design? Curious as to the controller circuit the F Sport bike uses as well.
