Samsung's new 2.04-inch color monitor for mobile phones supports high-definition moving pictures with its 240 × 240 pixel resolution. The thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) screen also reflects external light, so it uses one-fifth the power of conventional models, the company says.

Sharp is releasing a family of six color LCD monitors. These include: three 15-inch displays (LL-T151S1A, LL-T1511A, LL-T1501A); a high-resolution, lower-cost 16-inch monitor (LL-T1610W); and high-resolution, large-format, 18- and 20-inch displays (LL-T1810A and LL-T2000A). The company expects these products will appeal to corporations that compare them to CRT monitors—LCDs take up less desk space, and offer reduced eyestrain, heat, power, and emissions.

And now some other manufacturers are following suit. Hitachi has announced a line of three monitors that are black ("midnight gray"), instead of typical beige. Compared to the company's current line of products, the differences are purely aesthetic, not technical. The new line includes: the flat-faced, 21-inch CM823FB; the flat-faced, 19-inch CM772B; and the flat-panel LCD, 17-inch CML170B.

Light Matters: Systems Level Approach to HBLED illumination applications
Its good practice to apply a systems-level approach to high-brightness LED (HBLED) illumination applications. Minimally, the system includes the optical, thermal and electrical characteristics of the of the HBLED, the lens (if any) which is built-in to its package, secondary optics such as external plastic lenses/reflectors to direct the light as your application requires and power driver electronics.
