Engineers head for Japan

Tokyo—Three interrelated shows geared towards the manufacturing industry—the Design Engineering and Manufacturing Solutions Expo/Conference, the Mechanical Components and Materials Technology Expo, and the Industrial Virtual Reality Expo/Conference—open their doors July 4 to 6 at Tokyo's Big Sight Exhibition Center. This year's nearly 600 exhibitors, a 30% increase over last year's number, will welcome some 45,000 industry professionals representing a wide range of manufacturing sub-sectors.

"The combined three shows present a venue where industry professionals serious about doing business in the lucrative Japanese market gather under one roof for a period of three days," says International Sales Coordinator Judy Go. "Not only do the combined shows give visitors a forum to compare and buy the latest products, services, and technologies, they offer an invaluable opportunity to forge new business ties and partnerships." Here is a synopsis of the three shows:

DMS. Now in its 12th year, the Design Engineering and Manufacturing Solutions Expo/Conference is Japan's largest trade show and conference focusing on IT solutions for the manufacturing industry. Besides gathering together such major CAD/CAM vendors as Autodesk, CoCreate, IBM, PTC, SDRC, Solidworks, and UGS, DMS will also showcase six other special exhibit zones. These will be dedicated to CAE, ePDM, ERP/Production Control, Rapid Prototyping, Instrumentation and Control Systems, as well as the newly created 'Virtual Manufacturing Zone.' This high-quality gathering offers technology/business opportunities found nowhere else in Japan.

M-Tech. The Mechanical Components and Materials Technology Expo is Japan's largest exhibition for mechanical components and materials. Going on its fifth year, M-Tech features bearings, belts, shafts, motors, sensors, pneumatics, fasteners, engineering plastics, fabricated parts, and other mechanical components and materials. Exhibitors at the 'Materials/Fabricated Parts Zone,' for example, will showcase products and technologies for fabricating plastic, metal, and rubber parts. A 'Fasteners and Fastening Technology Zone' will welcome a range of exhibitors to answer fastening, joining, and assembly needs. Besides showing their products, exhibitors at M-Tech bring expertise and business opportunities. Each exhibiting company has a chance to land contracts with high turn-over or establish lasting business relationships resulting in stable monthly orders.

IVR. The Industrial Virtual Reality Expo/Conference is now in its 9th year. Featured technologies include data gloves, simulators, motion bases, trackers, and head mounted displays. VR technologies have become more vital over the years as their applications have broadened across many industries, such as manufacturing, amusement, plant engineering, broadcasting, medicine/health, and construction. It is at IVR where professionals from these industries can explore and apply VR technologies into their own fields.

Last but not least are the conference sessions. The keynote session, conducted by Tadashi Otsuki, the deputy president of Sony Entertainment Robot Co., will feature the making of AIBO, the robot dog. The DMS conference schedule offers another five sessions each under the IT solution track and technology track. In addition, the IVR keynote session will look at the latest technological trends while six other sessions will present actual applications of VR technologies in different fields.
