Fastening, Joining, and Assembly

Joseph Ogando, Regional Editor -- Design News, May 7, 2001

Forget about lancing. New cable-tie holders from PennEngineering self-clinch into sheet metal, providing an attachment point for mounting wires to an electrical chassis or enclosure. Because they become one with the sheet metal and don't protrude on the opposite side, these new TY-D Mount holders leave no openings for EMI/RFI, dirt, or dust. Sized to accommodate a variety of cables, the TY-D Mount hardware installs in sheets from 0.040 to 0.125 inch.

PennEngineering has also developed a new panel fastener designed for quick, tool-less installation into thin sheet materials. When hand pressed into properly sized holes in the mounting panel, the PFS SNAP-IN fastener stays in place by means of a plastic retainer that grips the panel with flexible fingers. The fastener can be installed either before or after final component assembly. The SNAP-IN's screw, which is held captive in the plastic retainer, features a standard dog-point lead-in, steel threads, and a six-lobe recess with an overmolded ABS cap.

The latest ultrasonic welder from Plastic Assembly Systems packs 2,000W of power into a 20-kHz benchtop unit that offers a stroke of 3.15 inches and a maximum force of 463 lbs. Microprocessor controlled, this new welder has digital control of process times (weld, hold, and delay), pre-trigger, and force trigger. It also offers variable output amplitude control and automatic frequency control.

Light Matters: Systems Level Approach to HBLED illumination applications
Its good practice to apply a systems-level approach to high-brightness LED (HBLED) illumination applications. Minimally, the system includes the optical, thermal and electrical characteristics of the of the HBLED, the lens (if any) which is built-in to its package, secondary optics such as external plastic lenses/reflectors to direct the light as your application requires and power driver electronics.
