Wood Flooring Goes Green
Rob Spiegel, Contributing Editor -- Design News, June 23, 2008
The term “green wood” has taken on a new meaning. JG Architectural Supply is now producing wood flooring that is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) as complying with environmentally friendly forestry practices. The FSC in Bonn, Germany, has developed principles, criteria and standards for forest management in an effort to implement sustainable forestry practices across the globe. Products certified by the FSC come from well-managed forests where the flora and fauna are protected and the rights of indigenous peoples are considered.
JG Architectural Supply’s new line of FSC-certified wood flooring consists of American oak, cherry, maple and walnut prepared in a variety of grades. While FSC-certified material carries a premium in the market, JG Architectural Supply has decided to sell its green wood at a lower profit margin to encourage its use.
