Microchip Adds 32-Bit USB On-the-Go PIC32 Microcontroller

With its announcement of a new, 32-bit PIC32 microcontroller with advanced USB OTG (on-the-go) connectivity at the Embedded Systems Show April in San Jose, Microchip extends its PIC32 family to 12 options. The new PIC32MX420F032H-401/PT comes in a 64-pin TQFP package and runs at 40MHz and features 32kbytes of Flash memory.

Microchip’s PIC32 family of microcontrollers with integrated USB OTG offers engineers extreme flexibility in their design efforts, notes Product Marketing Manager James Kurtz. “Products with OTG functionality can operate either in an embedded host role or as a device. When they encounter another OTG product, they can even negotiate which device will operate in which mode.”

To help engineers get up to speed quickly with the new device, Microchip app engineers is taking extraordinary care with the development tools. The PIC32USB Starter Board has the same form factor and expansion capabilities as the PIC32 starter board, giving engineers already using that kit a leg up in their development efforts. There’s a plethora of free, downloadable tools (such as MPLAB IDE and MPLAB C32 C Compiler Student Edition) and application expansion boards will be available.

Microchip says the board will be available in 2Q08, though no word yet on exact pricing and availability.
