Adding Brightness to HDTVs
Terry Costlow, Contributing Editor -- Design News, June 2, 2008
High-definition displays have become commonplace, so TV makers are returning to the time-tested concept of improving display capabilities. Dolby Labs. Inc. is taking a very modern approach with its high-dynamic-range technology, which employs LEDs to improve contrast ratio and image quality. The LEDs used to backlight LCD screens provide local dimming, which provides a perception of depth while enhancing brightness and contrast.
Among the key enabling components are Xilinx Inc.'s Virtex-4 SX FPGAs, which feature the company's XtremeDSP technology. Using FPGAs lets Dolby designers create tailored designs for each partner.
